I recently started using a program called Samurize on my work PC. Samurize is an incredibly versatile program that lets you setup desktop configurations to do just about anything. You can install plugins to pull data from various sources, write your own, or customize the installed plugins to get whatever you want out of it. I’ve tried various configurations before I settled on the one I use now.
I originally set one up as a Google Desktop sidebar replacement, including a full calendar, date, time, weather, system info, etc. I decided that this was taking up more space on my screen than I would like so I moved it to a taskbar replacement version. This version has much of the same information (minus the weather) but is in the space of a two row taskbar. As you can see by the screenshots on Flickr (original post and updated versions), it takes up very little space on my screen when combined with an auto-hide taskbar.
For those interested in the config files, here is the original and updated versions for you to download.
